Women of Ramayana

Everyone knows the Rāmāyaṇa. Rāma’s exile, Rāvaṇa’s arrogance, the burning of Laṅkā, the bridge of stones, and the return to Ayodhyā—we’ve heard it in so many languages that most of us could recite pieces of it before we could properly read.

But there is something we were never told.

What did Kaushalyā say to herself the night her son walked into the forest, she who was Mahārani, first wife, and somehow still came second? What did Mantharā actually see from those palace windows, and did she ever weep for what she’d set in motion? Urmilā waited fourteen years while every poet chasing the story followed her husband instead, and nobody wrote down what she did with all that time.

Nobody wrote down what Sītā was thinking either, sitting in the Aśoka garden through the long hours before Hanumān showed up. We were told she was patient. We were told she was pure. We were told she passed the test. Nobody bothered to ask how she felt about being tested at all.

Women of Rāmāyaṇa gathers twenty-two chapters and nine voices—queens, maidservants, mothers, wives, the beloved, and the condemned—and gives each of them something the original never did: a chance to talk without the epic standing between them and us.

Kaikeyi gets to explain herself as a mother who thought she was protecting her son and who has carried what came of that ever since. Śūrpaṇakhā talks as a woman who was free and got punished for it. Mandodarī, a queen sharp enough to see the war coming, warned her husband and watched him walk toward it anyway. Śabarī spent a lifetime devoted to something the world dismissed as madness, right up until the morning it wasn’t. Tārā lost a husband to an arrow shot from behind a tree, and there’s a particular kind of silence that settles in once the gods have labeled it Dharma.

Sītā gets five chapters. Her story keeps going after the fire—the fire wasn’t the end of her life, just the part everyone stopped paying attention to after. One chapter was never going to be enough for her.

None of this is softened for comfort. The women in these pages get frustrated, tender, contradictory, and wrong sometimes. They’re not asking to be forgiven, and a few of them aren’t convinced they’ve earned it. What they want is smaller than that and somehow harder to give—to be heard in their own words instead of described in somebody else’s.
